Ylang Ylang
Ylang ylang is the most tropical-smelling flower in perfumery, native to the Indian Ocean and Indonesian archipelago, with a scent that is custard-sweet, banana-ripe, jasmine-creamy, and slightly rubbery at high concentrations. It is one of the four cornerstones of Chanel No. 5 and shows up in almost every great floral perfume from the twentieth century onward. By Vedic logic, ylang ylang is Venus and Moon: Venus in its lush sweetness, its association with sensuality and warm climates, Moon in its watery softness and its tropical, languid quality. Ylang ylang is the most generous floral. It does not demand attention but warms everything around it. On skin it reads as honeymoon, holiday, late afternoon swim. Wear it in monsoon. Pairs with jasmine, sandalwood, and vanilla.
