Rose

Rose is the most planted, most distilled, most written-about flower in the world, and the most divisive in modern perfumery. There are over twenty thousand rose varieties, but perfumery uses two: Rosa damascena from Bulgaria, Turkey, and India, and Rosa centifolia from Morocco and France. India's contribution is Kannauj rose, distilled into ruh gulab in copper stills using techniques that predate refrigeration. The scent is honeyed, slightly green, and so familiar it is hard to perceive accurately. By Vedic logic, rose is pure Venus: the planet of beauty, sweetness, the heart, and the eternal feminine across every astrological tradition. There is no school of perfumery, classical or modern, that places rose elsewhere. On skin, rose reads differently across people, sometimes soapy, sometimes wine-like, sometimes powdery. The Indian palate tends to like rose deep and sweet, the French tend to like it green and dry. Wear it when you want to feel sweet without being saccharine. Pairs naturally with oud, saffron, sandalwood, and patchouli.
