Lemon

Lemon is the sharpest, cleanest, most immediately recognisable scent in perfumery, and the most fugitive. Sicilian Femminello lemons give the gold-standard oil, with Argentina and Spain producing most of the commercial volume. The scent is bright, acidic, slightly green, and almost antiseptic in its clarity. The problem with lemon is longevity: pure lemon oil evaporates in twenty minutes, which is why perfumes that smell lemony rely on synthetic anchors. By planetary-correspondence tradition, lemon is Mercury: clean, bright, communicative, the planet of breath and mental clarity. No other planet's qualities map onto lemon's sharpness. Lemon is the most refreshing note in perfumery and the most honest. It cannot fake depth. On skin it reads as cleanliness, vitality, slight discipline. Wear it in spring and summer mornings.
