Patchouli
Patchouli is the most polarizing note in modern perfumery. Half the world reads it as damp earth, the other half as old hippie head shops. The actual molecule is dark, herbal, musty, and slightly chocolatey, derived from a mint-family leaf that improves with age the way good whisky does. Indian patchouli is widely grown but most of the perfume-grade material comes from Indonesia. By Vedic logic, patchouli is Mars and Saturn: Mars in its raw, slightly aggressive earthiness, Saturn in its musty depth and the way it ages slowly. Patchouli does the work in modern fragrances that oud used to do, giving them shadow, weight, and skin-cling. It is rarely the lead note but it is what makes a perfume feel adult. On skin it reads as grounded sensuality. Wear it when you want to feel earthy rather than airborne. Pairs naturally with rose (the chypre accord), sandalwood, and amber.
