Musk

Musk historically came from a gland in the male Himalayan musk deer, harvested in Tibet, Nepal, and India, with kasturi cited in Sanskrit texts going back two thousand years. The trade was banned in 1979 after the deer became endangered, and all modern musk in perfumery is synthetic. The white musks of contemporary perfumery (Galaxolide, Habanolide, Cosmone) smell clean, slightly powdery, and almost human, while the older nitromusks were warmer and more animalic. By Vedic logic, musk is Mars and Venus: Mars in its animal warmth, its almost sweat-like intimacy, its primal pull, Venus in its sensuality, its skin-like softness, its erotic association across nearly every culture. Musk is the most intimate note in perfumery. It does not project the way oud does. It hides on skin and reveals itself only to people close enough to lean in. Wear it as a daily base, under heavier notes, or as a soft solo. Pairs with everything.
